How far would you be willing to go to save someone you love? It’s a question a man is faced with in author Cyana Gaffney’s first novel, titled ‘Veiled.’

The area author is holding a book signing for her novel on March 11 from 12-3 p.m. at IndigoSpirit in the Westland Market Mall in Spruce Grove.

The book follows the story of Ryan Foster, who is searching desperately for his close friend Hailey after she journeys from New York to Saudi Arabia, where she finds her life in danger in a land where women have few rights.

Gaffney herself was taken on a long journey from bookkeeping and business consulting to published author in writing the novel.

Born in Calgary, Gaffney was raised in Kelowna, B.C. Together with her husband Colin and their daughter, who is now almost 10, she moved around a lot before settling in Leduc in 2010.

After nine years in business, Gaffney decided it was time to get back to being creative. It was a new challenge she embraced that took its time unfolding.

Veiled was inspired by a dream she had one night in 2009 when her family lived in Quebec.

“I have very vivid dreams every night, and when I woke from one such dream, I thought it would make an excellent story,” she said.

The book initially began as a hobby, with Gaffney working at it off and on.

“There would be months straight where you would find me in a coffee shop, immersed in my writing,” she recalled. “Then years would go by where I wouldn’t touch it.”

The deep desire to pick up on it again arose in the spring of 2016 when she realized her “creative tank just wasn’t getting full,” she said.

And so, noticing she was very close to finishing her novel, she headed back to the coffee shops to get it done.

When a friend read the finished product and encouraged her to get it published, Gaffney was apprehensive.

But she took the plunge.

Veiled is a suspenseful story of loss, faith and redemption.

Ryan comes to the realization he’s in love with his friend Hailey all too late. By the time he learns this, she is on her way to surprise their friend Anna, who is now living in Saudi Arabia. Weeks later, when Ryan decides to call her, he’s faced with a terrifying reality — he discovers Hailey didn’t arrive.

With limited understanding of the culture in which she’s found herself, Hailey is paying an incredibly high cost. She must find the strength to endure as Ryan tries desperately to find her before it’s too late.

Veiled is available through Gaffney’s website, www.cyanagaffney.com, Amazon, select Chapters, Indigo and Coles bookstores, and several independent stores such as Audrey’s on Jasper Avenue in Edmonton and The Bookstore on Perron Street in St. Albert.

The sequel to Veiled will be released this summer.
